The official Sword Art Online anime account announced on April 3, 2026, that the broadcast of the first season’s Aincrad
arc will begin in three days. Based on this timeline, the broadcast is scheduled for April 6, 2026.
The Aincrad arc serves as the first main story arc of the Sword Art Online series. The narrative focuses on the experiences of Kazuto Kirito
Kirigaya and Asuna Yuuki, two of the many players trapped within a virtual reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game (VRMMORPG) of the same name.
Within the story, the game is accessed via a special virtual reality console called the NerveGear, which began its official service on November 6, 2022, at 13:00 JST. Players discovered they were unable to log out of the system and were informed that the only way to be freed from the game was to clear all 100 floors of the floating castle Aincrad by defeating the final boss.
Production and Original Broadcast
The anime series was produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Tomohiko Itō. It is based on the light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec.
The first season originally aired on Tokyo MX from July 8, 2012, to December 23, 2012. This initial run consisted of 25 episodes and was divided into two primary arcs: the Aincrad arc and the Fairy Dance arc, which adapted the first four volumes of the light novels.
Following its Japanese release, the series was distributed internationally. In North America, Aniplex of America released the series in four Blu-ray/DVD volumes on August 13, 2013. The English dubbed version premiered on Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block on July 28, 2013.
The home video release in Japan began on October 24, 2012, and concluded on June 26, 2013. The nine released volumes included bonus episodes titled Sword Art Offline
.
Franchise Origins and Legacy
The foundations of the series date back to 2002, when Reki Kawahara originally wrote Sword Art Online as a web novel on his personal website. This web novel version ran until 2008.
ASCII Media Works subsequently acquired the rights to the story and began publishing it as a light novel through the Dengeki Bunko imprint starting in April 2009. The light novel series remains ongoing.
The series has continued to mark significant story milestones with real-world events. On November 7, 2024, a special countdown stream was held to commemorate the exact moment Kirito cleared the game at the end of the Aincrad arc. The stream, which began at 9:33 am JST, played episodes 1 through 14 so that the game clear
scene coincided with the exact moment it occurred in the story’s timeline, which was November 7, 2024, at 14:55 Aincrad Standard Time.
This 2024 event included the reveal of a special Kirito and Asuna GAME CLEAR
visual and several commemorative videos, as well as the release of commemorative goods.
The Aincrad arc remains the central point of the series’ lore, establishing the high-stakes environment of the death game and the relationship between the primary protagonists before the story transitions into subsequent virtual worlds, such as Alfheim Online (ALO), where players assume the roles of fairies.
