Paris – In a important move for the cycling world, Tadej Pogačar, fresh off his fourth Tour de France triumph, has announced he will not participate in the upcoming Vuelta a España next month. The decision comes as the Slovenian superstar prioritizes recovery after an exceptionally demanding season.
A Strategic Break for a Champion
Pogačar, a dominant force in professional cycling, expressed his reasoning for the hiatus. “After such a demanding tour, we decided that it was best to take a break,” he stated. “The Vuelta is, of course, a race that I would love to return to. I have fantastic memories of 2019, but now the body tells me to rest.”
the UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider, renowned for his versatility and relentless pursuit of victory, was notably absent from the eight-man roster announced for the vuelta, which is set to commence on August 23rd. The team will instead be led by Portuguese rider João Almeida, who recently withdrew from the Tour de France due to a fractured rib, and Spanish talent Juan Ayuso.
Reflecting on a Grueling Season
This decision marks a shift from pogačar’s initial contemplation of participating in both the tour de France and the Vuelta a España this summer, a feat he achieved last year by completing the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France double.
team Sports Director Matxin Fernández elaborated on the strategic choice: “The idea this year was for Tadej to return to the Vuelta, but the season has been long for him,” Fernández commented. “We talked and agreed that the best thing for him now is to take a good break and prepare for his final goals.”
pogačar’s Stellar 2024 Campaign
The current season has already been a testament to Pogačar’s exceptional form. Beyond his fourth Tour de France title, he has secured victories in prestigious races including the Critérium du Dauphiné, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, La Flèche Wallonne, and Strade Bianche.
His dominant performance in the Tour de France saw him claim four individual stages, bringing his career Tour de France stage victories to 21. This adds to his extraordinary tally of 30 wins in major races, including six stages in the Giro d’Italia and three in the Vuelta a España. Pogačar is steadily etching his name into cycling history, wiht only four cyclists – Eddy Merckx, Miguel Induráin, Jacques Anquetil, and Bernard hinault - having won the tour de France five times.
looking Ahead: canada and world Championships
Pogačar is scheduled to take a well-deserved break until September. His return to competition is planned for the north American classics, the Grand prix Cycliste de Québec and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal.
“I am excited to return to Canada. The races are hard but lovely, and they adapt well to my style,” Pogačar shared, expressing his anticipation for these events. His focus also remains firmly on defending his World Champion title later this year in kigali, Rwanda. “My goal will be to compete well for that part of the season and especially for the World Championships.”
