BMW’s Regensburg Plant Celebrates 40 Years with Record Production
Regensburg, Germany – BMW Group’s Plant Regensburg is marking its 40th anniversary with a significant milestone: record production in 2025. The plant, which has grown to become the BMW Group’s highest-volume vehicle plant in Europe, produced 356,901 vehicles last year.
Since commencing operations in 1986, the Regensburg facility has manufactured approximately 8.7 million vehicles. The plant’s success story began in October 1986, with the official start of production ceremony held a month later, in November. Construction originally began in 1984, with an initial goal of producing around 400 vehicles per day with a workforce of approximately 3,500 employees.
Today, Plant Regensburg operates on a much larger scale, with a capacity nearing 1,400 vehicles daily and a workforce of around 9,000 employees, including approximately 380 working continuously in three shifts to ensure uninterrupted operation.
Currently, the plant specializes in the production of the BMW X1 and X2 sport activity vehicles, along with their fully electric counterparts, the iX1 and iX2. This focus positions Regensburg as a key component in BMW’s transition towards electric mobility.
Within BMW’s German manufacturing network – which comprises ten facilities across the country – Regensburg is one of four plants dedicated to automobile production, alongside Munich, Dingolfing, and Leipzig.
The plant’s evolution has been marked by significant technological advancements. Digitalization of processes began just a year after its opening, in 1987, and today, a substantial portion of industrial operations are managed through advanced automation and artificial intelligence systems. This transformation has contributed to improved efficiency, optimized production flows, and sustained high quality standards.
While Regensburg is BMW’s largest plant in Europe, the company’s largest global facility is located in Spartanburg, United States, with an annual production capacity of approximately 400,000 units. Both plants played a crucial role in the BMW Group’s overall performance in 2025, a year in which the BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce brands achieved a combined sales volume of roughly 2.45 million vehicles.
Plant Director Armin Ebner emphasized the importance of continuous efforts to increase competitiveness as the key to the plant’s success. The record production achieved in 2025 not only represents a new all-time high in the plant’s 40-year history but also contributed to the BMW Group’s overall production goals, mirroring the success of the previous year.
Detailed BMW Group production figures for 2025 will be released with the Integrated BMW Group Report in March 2026.
