On the day that Chinese President Xi Jinping mentioned the one country, two systems (one country, two systems) 20 times to mark the 25th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong sovereignty, Taiwan reaffirmed its opposition to the unification of the two systems (mainland China and Taiwan).

As in Hong Kong, China is proposing the ‘one country, two systems’ method of maintaining the capitalist system for Taiwan as a principle of peaceful unification, but Taiwan has clearly stated its refusal position.

The Continental Commission, Taiwan’s mainland China body, said on the 1st that “Hong Kong’s democracy, human rights, freedom, and rule of law have seriously retreated from 25 years ago.” It shows that it conflicts with the

“I would like to mention once again that the Taiwanese people have repeatedly expressed their firm position to reject one country, two systems to the world and the Chinese Communist Party through democratic elections,” the Continental Commission continued.

It was a reference to the situation in which the Democratic Progressive Party, with strong independence tendencies, is in power.

The Continental Commission also stated that their basic principles were the so-called ‘four principles’: constitution of liberal democracy, mutual non-subordination between Taiwan and China, infringing on sovereignty and not tolerating military conscription, and the Taiwanese people’s decision on the future of Taiwan.

He added, “I make it clear to the Beijing authorities that only when we face the fact that the Republic of China (Taiwan) exists can we deal with the political conflict between the two sides.”

At a ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong’s sovereignty in Hong Kong on the 1st, President Xi said that the one country, two system for Hong Kong had achieved “a globally recognized success” and that he would maintain it for the long term.

Prior to that, President Xi reaffirmed the basic principles of cross-strait relations, such as peaceful reunification and one country, two systems, in a speech at the 110th anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution in October last year, saying, “The peaceful reunification of the motherland is in the best interests of the Chinese people, including Taiwan.”
