The animated feature film Tangles
has a new trailer from the Independent Film Company and Sapan Studio that sets its theatrical release for January 2027, as reported by comingsoon.net. The hand-drawn black-and-white movie adapts Sarah Leavitt’s 2010 graphic memoir Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer’s, My Mother and Me
and features a voice cast that includes Abbi Jacobson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Bryan Cranston.
Trailer Release Dates And Theatrical Rollout Plans
The official trailer clocks in at 1:36 and introduces the film’s sparse black-and-white animation style. The film will have a limited theatrical release on January 15, 2027, followed by a nationwide expansion on January 22, 2027. The rollout follows an Oscar-qualifying run planned before the end of 2026.
Voice Cast And Creative Adaptation Challenges
Abbi Jacobson voices Sarah, a queer magazine illustrator in 1990s San Francisco who returns home to Maine to care for her mother, Midge. Julia Louis-Dreyfus voices Midge as her once-sharp intellectual spirit fades from Alzheimer’s disease, while Bryan Cranston plays Sarah’s father, Rob, and Beanie Feldstein voices her sister Hannah. Co-director Leah Nelson spent a decade bringing the book to the screen alongside co-writers Trev Renney and Sarah Leavitt, noting that translating Leavitt’s notes, snippets, and drawings into a linear script proved challenging.
Balancing Heavy Themes With Sharp Humor
Seth Rogen and his wife, Lauren Miller Rogen, produced the film through Point Grey Pictures and Lylas Pictures, alongside Monarch Media and Giant Ant. Speaking at the Middleburg Film Festival, Rogen discussed the project’s tonal balance.

To have the audience go on a journey that emotionally is not what they’re expecting it to be, and to find yourself laughing amid these very sad moments, I also think is really reflective of having lived an experience very much like this, and it truly is the embodiment of sadness and joy, swirling together in unexpected ways.

The supporting voice cast features Samira Wiley, Bowen Yang, Sarah Silverman, Wanda Sykes, and Pamela Adlon. The film has built momentum through festival screenings at Cannes, Annecy, San Sebastián—where it won the Sebastiane Award—and the Toronto International Film Festival, with Cartoon Brew noting that the distribution deal makes it an immediate contender in this year’s competitive animated feature Oscar race.
