Intel announced on August 10, 2026, that it is raising $15 billion through a share sale to fund the expansion of its chip contract manufacturing business. The move follows a surge in Intel’s stock price driven by turnaround efforts and an increase in demand for central processing units (CPUs) linked to the rise of AI agents, according to Reuters.

The company is investing in new facilities and advanced packaging capabilities to compete with industry leaders such as TSMC in the contract chip manufacturing sector, Reuters reported. This capital raise occurs as technology giants spend trillions globally to support AI infrastructure and demand.

Intel’s shares dropped more than 4% in premarket trading on August 10, which Reuters attributed to shareholder concerns over dilution. Despite the dip, the stock has nearly tripled this year, outperforming the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which rose nearly 75%, as well as rivals AMD and TSMC, according to the same report.

Intel has given underwriters a 30-day option to purchase up to $2.25 billion in additional shares at the offer price, minus discounts. The joint book-running managers for the sale include Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Securities, and Citigroup Global Markets, according to Reuters.

AI Demand and Manufacturing Capacity

Intel executives stated that orders have exceeded the company’s current manufacturing capacity due to the shift toward AI agents, according to Reuters. This demand led the company to increase its capital expenditure forecast for this year from $18 billion to $20 billion in July.

As part of its growth strategy, Intel committed to high-volume production using its 14A manufacturing process by 2028. Reuters noted that the company had previously warned this technology could be shelved if it failed to secure a major external customer.

The company’s foundry unit has since secured Tesla as a 14A customer. Reuters also reported growing optimism regarding another major client after U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Apple would manufacture processors with Intel, though neither Apple nor Intel has confirmed the partnership.

International Infrastructure Investment

Intel is expanding its footprint outside the United States to support these manufacturing goals. Last month, the company announced a 5 billion euro ($5.77 billion) investment to expand and upgrade chip manufacturing in Ireland, according to Reuters.

This Irish project represents more than 25% of Intel’s planned capital spending for 2026, according to the Reuters report. The investment is part of a broader push to build out the costly infrastructure required for contract chip manufacturing.

Analysts cited by Reuters suggested that the recent rally in Intel’s share price increased the likelihood of an equity raise, providing the company a window to secure the funds necessary for these aggressive expansion plans.
