Terrorist militia IS threatens to carry out attacks in Europe – including at the European Football Championship?

The European Football Championship is coming up in Germany in the summer. The security authorities are arming themselves. Because the terrorist militia IS is already threatening.

The terrorist militia “Islamic State” (IS) is threatening terrorist attacks in Europe, possibly in connection with the men’s European Football Championship in the summer. A terrorist organization’s propaganda magazine published corresponding images. The “Bild” newspaper first reported about it.

In one picture, a heavily armed and masked man in a camouflage suit can be seen from behind, apparently standing in a tram carriage. On one of the seats there is a box that has the word TNT (abbreviation for the explosive trinitrotoluene) written on it. Above it you can see a sign that says “Welcome to Europe”. The picture also reads: “Last Call Before Exit”.

“Strikes from the air”

Another picture shows a football stadium with “Realmadrid” written on the roof. A drone hovers above. The image calls on IS supporters to carry out attacks using unmanned aircraft. “If they constrict you on the ground and oppress you, then strike from the air,” the picture reads.

Terror group planned attacks in Germany

When the attack plans against Cologne Cathedral became known, terrorism expert Peter Neumann wrote: “ISPK is probably the only IS offshoot that would currently be capable of carrying out a large, coordinated attack in the West.” You can read more about the group here.

Germany and France are cooperating to combat terrorism

According to Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), Germany and France want to cooperate more closely on security at major sporting events this summer. “The security of the European Football Championship is our top priority in Germany,” the SPD politician told the “Handelsblatt” at the end of March. This also applies to the Olympic Games in Paris.

She therefore agreed to work closely with the French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin. “German police forces will be deployed at the Olympics in Paris, French police at the Euros in Germany.” Faeser announced that the German security authorities were preparing themselves even more for possible threats. “This ranges from protection against Islamists and other potential violent criminals to the security of our networks against cyber attacks.”

She defended the already announced border controls during the European Football Championships in June and July. Temporary controls at all German borders are essential in order to prevent violent criminals from entering the country. “We are doing everything we can to ensure that controls have as little impact as possible on commuters or commercial traffic,” she said.

The European Football Championship in Germany starts on June 14th, the Olympic Games begin on July 26th in Paris.
