Tesla Profit Plunges: Musk’s Political Involvement Impacts Earnings
Elon Musk’s Political Foray Continues to Hit Tesla’s Bottom Line
A year after Elon Musk’s deep dive into the political arena, the repercussions are still significantly impacting his automotive giant, Tesla. The latest quarterly report reveals a sharp downturn in both sales and profits, signaling a continued struggle for the electric vehicle manufacturer.
Sales and Profits Take a Hit
Tesla, which has been navigating months of consumer boycotts, announced a 12% drop in revenue and a 16% slump in profits for the three months ending in June. This decline is attributed to a persistent reluctance among buyers to engage with the brand.
The company’s quarterly profits fell to US$1.17 billion (NZ$1.93 billion), or 33 cents a share (NZ$0.55), a noticeable decrease from the US$1.4 billion (NZ$2.31 billion), or 40 cents a share (NZ$0.66), reported previously. This marks the third consecutive quarter where Tesla has experienced declining profits, a trend that investors are closely monitoring.
Revenue also saw a dip, decreasing from US$25.5 billion (NZ$42.08 billion) to US$22.5 billion (NZ$37.13 billion) during the April to June period. While this figure was slightly better than Wall Street’s projections, it underscores the ongoing challenges Tesla faces in maintaining its growth trajectory.
Musk and the shifting Political Landscape
Elon Musk’s ventures into politics have been a subject of considerable discussion. While he has previously indicated the formation of a new political party, the concrete steps taken and the potential impact on upcoming elections remain unclear.
This potential new political alignment comes at a time of evident friction between Musk and US President Donald Trump. The tech billionaire’s strong disapproval of Trump’s tax cut legislation, which he famously described as “insane,” has highlighted a growing rift. The divergence in priorities between Trump and Musk, once a staunch supporter and a key figure in cost-cutting initiatives, not only exposes the delicate nature of their relationship but also hints at the potential political fallout for Musk’s business interests. Given that Tesla relies on billions of dollars in government contracts, any significant political misstep could prove to be a costly affair for the company.
