Thailand Advocates for Digital Water Management at Mekong-Korea Water Conference

Deputy Secretary General of the Office of National Water Resources (ONWR), Mr Chayan Muangsong, recently represented the Thai government at the 2nd Mekong-Korea Meeting in the Republic of Korea. The conference, organized under the theme “Climate Resilience through Digital Water Management in the Mekong Region,” aimed to enhance water resource management capabilities in Mekong Basin countries. The focus was on sustainable development, integrating collaboration networks, and leveraging innovative technologies for effective water management practices.

During the conference, Thailand emphasized the importance of cooperation between the Mekong Basin and the Han River of the Republic of Korea, particularly in conserving river basins amidst climate change in the ASEAN region. Discussions were held on future guidelines for climate change adaptation and water resource management in the Mekong Basin, involving representatives from Lao PDR, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Thailand addressed the transboundary effects resulting from climate change and economic growth in the region, proposing the application of digital technology for improved forecasting, joint management, surveillance, and impact tracking. The meeting aims to yield significant sustainable development outcomes and called for systematic water management, prevention of climate change effects, improvement of water security, and the establishment of a Carbon Neutral Society through climate finance.

Additionally, the conference focused on information sharing and emphasized the importance of creating fair and inclusive growth. Joint actions plans were drafted, highlighting collaborations among Mekong River Commission member countries and development partners to protect and restore the watershed ecosystem.

According to Mr Chayan, the 2nd Mekong-Korea Meeting serves as a significant platform for discussing water issues, solutions, and expanding cooperation with other partners. The conference brings together ministerial representatives, water experts, and stakeholders from the Mekong Sub-Region.

The international conference on water management served as a forum for exchanging ideas and seeking solutions to address the challenges posed by climate change in the Mekong Region. It underlines the importance of leveraging digital technology to effectively manage water resources in the face of climate change.
