Thank You for Being a Friend: The Scoop on a Possible Golden Girls Reboot
The Golden Girls: Why a Reboot Will Never Happen
The Golden Girls is a beloved sitcom that follows the lives of four mature women sharing a house in Miami, Florida. The show, which originally aired from 1985 to 1992, has become increasingly popular since its initial release. Fans of the show were excited when rumors circulated about a potential reboot on Disney+, but unfortunately, it was all just a scam.
Why Golden Girls Fans Thought There Would Be a Disney+ Reboot
A Facebook post by YODA BBY ABY, an account known for creating hype for fake movie sequels and TV reboots, included a mockup image for the Disney+ reboot, starring Lisa Kudrow as Rose, Tina Fey as Dorothy, Maya Rudolph as Blanche, and Amy Poehler as Sophia. While the idea of a reboot was exciting, the casting choices were met with skepticism, and the whole thing was eventually revealed to be a scam.
Why Did Golden Girls End So Suddenly?
The Golden Girls ended in 1992 after a successful seven-season run. According to Bea Arthur’s son, Matthew Saks, Arthur felt the show’s quality was beginning to decline, and she was 70 years old and wanted to do other things with her time. While some speculated that Arthur quit the show due to a feud with co-star Betty White, this was not the case. White said Arthur was not friendly towards her, but their “feuds” were often exaggerated.
Golden Girls Had a Short-Lived Sequel Series
After Arthur left the show, the series ended with Dorothy marrying Blanche’s uncle, Lucas Hollingsworth. A short-lived spinoff series called The Golden Palace followed the women as they purchased and ran a hotel. Arthur appeared in two episodes, but the show failed to capture the same joy as The Golden Girls and was canceled after one season.
Why a Golden Girls Reboot Will Never Happen
According to series creator Susan Harris, a Golden Girls reboot will never happen. Harris said, “They did ‘Golden Girls’ the musical and they wanted to do ‘Golden Girls’ again, and we always said no because ‘Golden Girls’ wouldn’t be ‘Golden Girls’ without that cast.” The chemistry between the four leads is what made the show a success, and trying to recapture that with a new cast would be impossible.
Where Can I Watch Golden Girls Every Season?
While there may not be a new Golden Girls, there are seven seasons and 180 episodes to choose from. The show is available to stream on both Hulu and Disney+, and fans can also purchase complete series DVD and Blu-ray sets. With so many episodes to choose from, there’s no wrong place to start, but check out our guide to the 25 best episodes of the series for some recommendations.
