Today.com, USA, highlights articles related to black coffee

[대한급식신문=안유신 기자] A famous American media published an article stating that black coffee helps to lose weight and prevent dementia. In this media, the calories in a cup of black coffee were described as 2 kcal, the caffeine content as 95 mg, and the fat and protein content as 0 g and 0.3 g, respectively.

According to the Korea Food Communication Forum, TODAY.com recently published an article related to black coffee (Benefits of Black Coffee: Dietitian on Heart Health, Weight Loss, Risks). Here are four health benefits you can get from drinking more than one cup of black coffee a day.

An American media outlet reported that black coffee helps in weight loss and dementia prevention.

First of all, it is good for heart health. According to an article (Association Between Coffee Intake and Incident Heart Failure Risk) published in ‘Circulation: Heart Failure’ in 2021, the greater the amount of coffee consumed (more than one cup of coffee per day), the lower the risk of heart failure . In other words, consuming 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day is associated with increased life expectancy and a reduced risk of heart disease and heart rhythm problems. This is a benefit of coffee that applies to both people with and without heart disease.

Secondly, it can reduce mortality and another study states that drinking unsweetened coffee is associated with a reduced risk of death (Association of Sugar-Sweetened, Artificially Sweetened, and Unsweetened Coffee Consumption With All-Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality : A Large The Prospective Cohort Study, Annals of Internal Medicine, 2022) was also published. In this study, people who drank 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee a day with no added sugar had a 16 to 21 percent lower risk of death over 7 years than people who didn’t drink coffee at all. Coffee drinkers also had a reduced risk of developing liver disease and type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes.

Thirdly, it is also useful for diet. Research supports this finding that consuming moderate amounts of caffeinated coffee can be an effective weight management strategy. This article (Low to moderate, but not large, increase in caffeine-containing coffee consumption is associated with favorable changes in body fat) was published in the journal Clinical Nutrition in 2023. According to the study, it was found that people who rarely drank coffee but increased their coffee consumption to seven cups per week had a decrease in total body fat. It was assumed that the anti-obesity effect of coffee was due to the fact that coffee influences the metabolism by activating it. Additionally, people who like to drink coffee tend to do more physical activity.

Fourth, it is beneficial for brain health. Research has shown that people who drink 4 to 6 cups of coffee a day have a lower incidence of stroke and dementia and this research paper is titled (Coffee and Tea Consumption and the Risk of Developing Stroke, Dementia and Post-Dementia stroke: a cohort study in the UK Biobank) was published in “Plos Health” in 2021. Coffee can improve mood and moderate amounts of caffeine can help relieve depression. This is because it stimulates dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain.
