The Challenges of Growing Up in the Shadow of a Golf Legend: The Story of Charlie Woods

Even if his father is a living legend in the golf world, his growing up process is not smooth.

Tiger Woods’ (USA) son, Charlie, is already famous. He really made his name known when he took part with Woods in the 2020 event tournament, the PNC Championship. By showing the same swing, posture and performance as Woods, golf fans were eager to see ‘the birth of another Woods’.

As if to repay the interest, Charlie went to high school and gained experience by participating in junior competitions. In particular, last October, he participated in the PGA South Florida High School Championship and won the individual division, leading to the team championship.

Charlie was in the media again. He appeared in the pre-qualifying rounds of the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic. Even if he made it through the pre-qualifying rounds, he had to go through the qualifying rounds on Monday, but he attracted attention to see if he could debut ahead of his father, who competed on Tour PGA as an amateur. 16.

The results were not good. In the preliminaries held on the 23rd, he recorded 86 strokes at 16 over par. It was particularly painful to score 12 strokes in the 7th hole (par 4). He had to postpone his PGA Tour debut until a later date.

The result of the game alone was enough to shock the teenager, but the gallery’s ‘bad manners’ also worried him. The Palm Beach Post, a local American newspaper, said, “The teenage fans were too enthusiastic and failed to help Woods.”

As Charlie took to the fairway in frustration, there were no ropes on the course to separate the galleries. The galleries closed in on Charlie. Yahoo Sports in the US reported that a member of the gallery asked Charlie, “Who are you? “Are you a firefighter?” he reportedly asked.

One fan brought a book written by his father Woods and asked Charlie to sign it. When the official stopped him, Charlie broke his tee shot on the 13th hole by shouting, “I live here.”

Some might say that having a star father means having to live with it, but it was a particularly overwhelming day for 15-year-old Charlie, who dreams of becoming a golf player. US Golf Digest said, “Golf is hard. “Don’t make it harder for Charlie Woods,” he pointed out to the unruly fans.
