The electric vehicle market has doubled… Half were sold in China.

Last year’s global sales were 6,662,759 units.
China’s share of 50%… Germany and the US
Tesla ranked first, Hyundai and Kia ranked fifth

Last year, global EV sales increased by more than 100% compared to the previous year. China accounted for half of the total sales.

According to the report ‘Analysis of the Supply Status of Electric Powered Vehicles in Major Countries in 2021’ released by the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association on the 5th, a total of 84,551,529 cars were sold worldwide last year. The growth rate was only 4.3% compared to the previous year due to supply chain instability and the spread of COVID-19. On the other hand, 6,662,759 electric powered vehicles such as pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid cars and hydrogen electric vehicles were sold, up 110.7% from the previous year.




Pure electric vehicles rose 119% to 4,73614 units, and plug-in hybrid cars rose 92.6% to 1916,644 units. Hydrogen electric vehicles increased 86.3% to 15,501 units. The share of electric vehicles in the overall automobile market has doubled from 3.9% in 2020 to 7.9% last year.

The Chinese market has grown rapidly. 3,328,301 electric vehicles were sold, up 166.6% from the previous year, accounting for 50.0% of global sales. Compared to 39.5% in 2020, this is an increase of 10.5 percentage points. The Chinese government extended subsidies for electric vehicles and sales of low-end models were greatly affected. Germany sold 69,4817 units, up 72%, following China. In third place, the US sold 669,931 units, a 101.3% increase thanks to the expansion of new models. South Korea maintained its ninth place following 2020 with 128,629 units, a 103.8% increase.

By manufacturer, Tesla maintained the top spot with sales of 10,45,072 units, a 128.0% increase. The Volkswagen Group ranked second with sales of 709,030 units, an increase of 84.2%, thanks to the launch of new models such as the ID.3. In third place was BYD of China, which sold 590,089 units, a 232.2% increase from the previous year. Hyundai Motor and Kia sold 384,783 units, a 98.1 percent increase, to rank fifth, up one place from 2020.

In terms of sales by electric vehicle model, Tesla Model 3 (563,266) and Model Y (43,5672) took the first and second places. Hongkwang Mini of Shanghai GM Wuling (SGMW), a joint venture between the United States and China, sold 426,482 units, ranking third. The top three models accounted for 30.1% of total sales. Hyundai and Kia’s electric vehicles entered the top 20 of Kona and Niroman, and placed 15th and 18th, respectively.
