The Importance of Green Space for Children Under 5: A Key to Better Mental Health

Green space is important for children up to 5 years old who spend a lot of time at home.

There is no better medicine than nature to cure the mind. This doesn’t just apply to adults who are tired of social life.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA Network Open), children aged 2 to 5 who were born and raised in green areas such as forests and parks had fewer emotional problems.

To understand the impact of early exposure to green spaces, researchers analyzed parents’ reports of their children’s behavior collected from a sample of children aged 2 to 11 years. The researchers compared the report with satellite data that quantified the density of vegetation around the children’s residences at the time of birth.

The sample included data from 2,103 children in 199 counties in 41 U.S. states, making the study broad in scope and encompassing a variety of geographic and socioeconomic contexts.

The study found that children aged 2 to 5 years old born and raised in green areas had fewer emotional problems. This relationship held true even after taking into account factors such as the sex of the child, the parents’ education level, and the socioeconomic status of the neighborhood.

Interestingly, no beneficial effects of green spaces were observed in children aged 6 to 11 years. These children are likely to have spent more time in residential settings close to school. These changes suggest that the impact of green spaces on mental health may be particularly important in the early years, when children are more likely to spend time at home.

“The findings support existing evidence that being in nature is good for children,” the researchers said. “They also suggest that early childhood is a critical period for exposure to green spaces.”

“These findings highlight the potential of natural environments to support early childhood development and mental health,” the researchers said. “Ensuring access to green spaces is important for public health and urban planning, particularly for improving the well-being of young children.” it could be an important strategy,” she suggested.
