The large-scale failure of Japan’s KDDI Telecom was finally repaired for more than 48 hours + 39.15 million people were affected

The second largest telecommunications company in Japan, “KDDI”, recently suffered a large-scale failure, which prevented users who used KDDI at the time from using telephone and mobile network services for more than 48 hours. In addition to making users unable to use mobile phones, the failure also included local ATMs, airport radios, and weather forecast systems. KDDI has now resumed service.

According to the Japanese media NHK, in the early morning of July 2, a nationwide failure occurred in KDDI, a large telecommunications company in Japan, making it impossible for individual KDDI users across the country to make calls and use the mobile network of their mobile phones to surf the Internet. In addition, KDDI also provides services for Japan’s “Internet of Things”, so this failure also affects many Japanese companies, including the radio systems involved in Japan’s Narita Airport and Haneda Airport, and the real-time weather of Japan’s meteorological sense. Forecast systems, JR cargo transportation systems, and bank teller machines, etc.

The fault affected a total of about 39.15 million people. After more than 48 hours of emergency repairs, the emergency repairs were completed at 6:00 p.m. on July 3, and all services have now been restored. For this network failure, KDDI President Makoto Takahashi has held a press conference to apologize and explained that the reason for the network failure is that KDDI has problems when replacing the voice service equipment during regular maintenance. Japanese Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Kyoyuki Kaneko criticized KDDI’s network failure as a “major accident” within the law, and said the Japanese government would launch an investigation.
