The Legacy of the iPhone SE 1st Generation: A Vintage Product Reflecting Steve Jobs’ Philosophy

iPhone SE 1st Generation Officially Registered as Vintage Model by Apple

On the 5th of this month, Apple made an announcement that the ‘iPhone SE 1st generation’ smartphone has been officially registered as a vintage model. This device, which embodies the last philosophy of late Apple founder Steve Jobs (1955-2011), was sold in 2018 and is being registered as an old product 5 years later.

Old and Discontinued Products

According to Apple’s website, products that were last sold more than five years ago are labeled as vintage, while those discontinued for more than seven years are registered as completely discontinued. The first generation iPhone SE, released in March 2016 and sold until September 2018, now falls into the outdated category after 5 years.

Other products that have been registered as old products until recently include the Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2, MacBook Pro models from 2015 to 2017, iPod Nano 7th generation, iPod Shuffle 4th generation, as well as the iPhone 5 to iPhone 6S Plus, and iPad Air to iPad 5th generation.

Older products are not guaranteed repair services by Apple or Apple Authorized Service Providers, although some services may be available if parts are accessible.

Discontinued Products

If a product is registered as discontinued after two years, even the corresponding service will seize. Discontinued products include the iPhone 1st generation to iPhone 5C, iPad 1st generation to iPad Mini 3rd generation, iPod Touch 5th generation, and MacBook Pro models from 2006 to 2014.

Despite the latest iPhone SE 3rd generation being released in March 2022, Apple users still consider the first generation iPhone SE as the last iPhone infused with Jobs’ philosophy, as it is a rebuilt version of the iPhone 5S, the last project designed by Jobs during his lifetime.

In terms of future iPhone SE releases, Apple is said to be preparing for the 4th generation in 2025, adopting a design based on the iPhone 14 and iPhone XR, and removing the home button with ‘Touch ID’.

It’s essential to note that the first generation iPhone SE has now become a part of Apple’s history, but the iPhone SE series continues to be part of Apple’s product lineup, with the latest models being the only Apple smartphones that support the ‘Touch ID’ fingerprint sensor.

On the 5th (local time), Apple added the 1st generation iPhone SE to the list of old and discontinued products on its website.

Apple labels products last sold more than five years ago as vintage. After 7 years, it is registered as a completely discontinued product.

The first generation iPhone SE was released in March 2016. It was sold until September 2018, and is now an outdated product after 5 years.

Products registered as old products until recently include △Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2 (released in 2016) △MacBook Pro 2015~MacBook Pro 2017 △iPod Nano 7th generation (released in 2012) · Shuffle 4th generation (released in 2010) △ includes iPhone 5 (released in 2012) ~ iPhone 6S Plus (released in 2015) △ iPad Air (released in 2013) ~ iPad 5th generation (released in 2017).

Older products are not guaranteed to be repaired by Apple or Apple Authorized Service Providers. However, if parts are available, some services may be available.

Registered as discontinued product after 2 years Service discontinued

However, if the product is registered as a discontinued product after two years, even the corresponding service will cease.

Discontinued products include △iPhone 1st generation (released in 2007) ~ iPhone 5C (released in 2013) △ iPad 1st generation (released in 2010) ~ iPad Mini 3rd generation (released in 2014 ) △iPad 1st generation Touch 5th generation (released in 2012) △MacBook Pro (released in 2006) ~ MacBook Pro 2014 models (released in 2014).

If there is no significant difference in the release period between older and discontinued products, or in fact, if discontinued products are earlier, it is because they have been sold for a long time on Apple website.

Meanwhile, the first-generation iPhone SE is being treated as a rebuilt version of the iPhone 5S, which was the last project designed by Steve Jobs during his lifetime. In fact, except for some performance like CPU and camera, it is exactly the same as the iPhone 5S.

For this reason, Apple users call the first generation iPhone SE the last iPhone infused with Jobs’ philosophy.

Now, the first generation iPhone SE has become part of Apple’s history, but Apple still presents the iPhone SE series.

iPhone SE is currently the only Apple smartphone device that supports the ‘Touch ID’ fingerprint sensor. The most recently released iPhone SE series is the 3rd generation iPhone SE, which was released in March 2022. It is known that Apple is preparing the 4th generation iPhone SE in 2025.

However, in the case of the 4th generation iPhone SE, it is said that the home button with ‘Touch ID’ will be removed and a design based on the iPhone 14 and iPhone XR will be adopted.
