On the 11th (local time), the Simpson family announced on Simpson’s social networking service ‘X (formerly Twitter)’, “On the 10th, our father, Simpson, passed away after a battle with cancer.” Pro Football Hall of Fame Chairman Jim Porter also released a statement on this day, saying, “Simpson died of cancer the day before.” According to the statement, Simpson revealed about two months ago that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and had been undergoing chemotherapy.

Simpson rose to fame as an American football ‘superstar’ in the 1970s. While playing in the National Football League (NFL) for 11 seasons, he set several records, including becoming the first running back to run for more than 2,000 yards in 1973, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. However, controversy began in June 1994 when he was arrested on charges of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman. Although there was a lot of physical evidence pointing to him at the time, he continued to maintain his innocence, and he was eventually acquitted after a long trial. This experiment, known as the ‘Experiment of the Century’, sparked controversy about America’s strict evidentiary views and was made into various documentaries and films.

At the time, Simpson’s team claimed that the police, obsessed with racism, fabricated evidence to convict Simpson. The Simpson trial received a lot of attention in 1992, shortly after the ‘LA riots’ began due to the mass beating of Rodney King, a black man, by white police officers who were caught speeding. The trial was broadcast live on television, and many Americans believed that Simpson had committed the crime, but many black people had conflicting views that Simpson was innocent, revealing a cross-section of racial conflict in the United States.

After a trial that took 11 months from jury selection to verdict, Simpson was acquitted in October 1995. In the United States, appeals are not allowed in cases where there is a verdict of not guilty in accordance with the one-shot-one-thing-one principle -something, so the trial ended with this. The victims’ families filed a civil lawsuit when Simpson’s criminal conviction became impossible. And the civil court recognized responsibility for the 1997 murder case and ruled that $33.5 million in compensation should be paid to the bereaved family. Simpson’s property was seized, but most of the damages are said to have not been paid.

Simpson was later indicted in 2007 on charges of threatening two sports memorabilia dealers with a gun and robbing them of memorabilia, along with five associates, at a hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, and was sentenced to up to 33 years in prison that year following .

Simpson, who served nine years in prison, was released on parole from the Nevada State Correctional Center on October 1, 2017 and was living in a restricted residence in Las Vegas, but was only able to leave Las Vegas in December 2021 when his parole period ended. . However, he died two years and four months after being freed.
