Understanding Cataracts: Why Aging Eyes Need Special Care

As you get older, unlike when you were younger, you may develop symptoms or experience illnesses that didn’t exist in the past. Some patients are embarrassed because they develop allergies that did not exist in their youth, while others feel stressed due to changes in their physical strength and health compared to when they were younger.

As we age, it is natural for our physical functions to decline. If you neglect your health care because you think you have the same health conditions as when you were in your twenties, you could be in big trouble.

This also applies to the eyes. As we age, the elasticity of the lens decreases and vision loss occurs. Also, along with presbyopia, cataract disease can occur, which causes clouding of the lens, causing difficulties.

Director Jeong Eui-sang of the S&Yu Eye Department said: “Cataract, an eye disease, is a disease that can occur even at a young age. However, if you consider the patients who come to the hospital due to illness, many of them are middle-aged or elderly. “In fact, it can be said to be a disease that the elderly population should pay attention to.”

He continued: “The important thing in treating cataracts is to recognize it as presbyopia and not neglect it. “This is because, although the symptoms of decreased vision with age are caused by cataracts, there are cases where it is thought to be a simple phenomenon of aging like presbyopia and is not treated without any treatment,” he explained .

In fact, cataracts are a disease that requires treatment and, if left untreated, can worsen and even lead to blindness.

Director Jeong said: “Early symptoms include blurring of light, blurring of vision as if there is fog, or symptoms that make the eyes more visible at night. “When these symptoms occur, they need to be treated to improve them,” he said.

He continued: “The treatment method is surgical, which replaces the existing cloudy lens with an artificial lens. When choosing an artificial lens, you need to choose between various types of lenses based on your health, lifestyle and vision problems. “Presbyopia is often present in older adults, so it may be beneficial to undergo vision correction and cataract treatment using multifocal artificial lenses that can improve this condition,” she added.
