The Link Between Gut Bacteria and Erectile Dysfunction: A New Study

While certain gut bacteria are known to be involved in various inflammatory diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, research has shown that the same is true for erectile dysfunction (ED).

A research team from Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine in China analyzed the composition of intestinal bacteria in patients with erectile dysfunction and healthy people and published the results in the international journal Microbial Biotechnology.

The subjects of the analysis were 53 ED patients and 32 normal people (control group), and both groups had the same background, including age, BMI, hypertension and diabetes.

As a result of collecting gut bacteria DNA through a fecal test and analyzing bacterial species, there were 619 common gut bacteria in both groups and approximately 140 and 56 unique gut bacteria in the ED and control groups, respectively.

Furthermore, the ED group had more bacterial species than the control group. Bacteroidota, Proteobacteria, Fusobacteriota, Desulfobacterota, VerrucomicrobiotaEra. Vice versa, in the control group BifidobacteriumThere were others.
