The military leaders of three West African countries, where coups were carried out, formed an alliance

Junta leaders signed the Liptako-Gourma Charter, establishing the Alliance of Sahelian States. The pact is named after the region where the borders of the three countries meet.

Colonel Asimi Goitathe leader of Mali’s junta, said in a statement: Today, with the heads of state of Burkina Faso and Niger, I signed the Liptako-Gourma Charter, establishing the Alliance of Sahel States with the aim of establishing an architecture of collective defense and mutual assistance for the benefit of our population”.

The new pact calls on the three neighboring countries to come to each other’s defense.

All three countries face jihadist threats.

All three countries are among the states of the region where coups were carried out after 2020.
