The Musical Journey of Harris Jayaraj: From Debut to Legend

Nostalgia Notebook for 90s Kids would be incomplete without AR Rahman’s music. Reigning Indian film music with his debut film Roja in 1992, Rahman remains a star even today. While legends are celebrated in all fields and all the time, we also have personal favorites in those same fields. Like the Tamil fans who held Dalapathy Vijay and Thala Ajith close to their chest when Rajinikanth was a superstar. Haris Jayaraj is the composer who turned Rahmania into a celebration of the teenage years for the children of the 90s. Although they are die-hard fans of Rahman, there are many people who hold Harris Jayaraj’s songs close to their hearts with the same love. Harris, who celebrates his birthday in January with Rahman, also enters from Kalari Rahman.

Harris was born on January 8, 1975 in Chennai to SM Jayakumar and Rachel Jayakumar, one of the busiest guitarists in South Indian cinema. Although they began with the study of Carnatic music at the age of six, Harris’ songs are heavily influenced by Western music and church music. Harris Jayaraj became an independent music director in 2001 with Gautham Menon’s directorial debut ‘Minnalai’. The all-time Tamil team, Tamarai-Gautam-Haris Sangeet Trio, was also born from here.

The songs in the film, Waseegara, Ivanaro, Poopol Poopol en Neshche Poitaval were born from the pen of Tamara. Waseegara has become an evergreen love track in Indian cinema itself. Harris also won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for his first film. Guru actually broke the record of AR Rahman who won nine consecutive Filmfare awards.

The successful trio reunited once again for Suriya’s exciting romantic thriller Kaka Kaka. Kaka Kaka was a film where Harris proved equally talented in singing and background music. Repeating his award at the Filmfare, Harris also won the Tamil Nadu Government Award for Best Music Director of the year. All the songs in the film were extremely popular. Harris’ mesmerizing music accompanied the remake of Minnalai and Kaka Kaka. Later, the Tamara-Gautam-Harris trio repeated their success in Vettayadu Valayad and Varanam Ayiram.

The 2008 musical love story Varanam Ayeram is still considered one of the best of the trio’s career. But two years later, when the film Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya was released, AR Rahman became the music director. The ego clash between Gautham Menon and Harris Jayaraj broke up the smitten couple. Still, Tamara’s lyrics were great for Gautham’s love film. Nee Thane N Ponvasantam also, Harris was defeated. The music was composed by Ilayaraja. Gautham Menon also had to drop Tamara from the film due to Ilayaraja’s displeasure.

After a gap of seven years, the trio Harris-Tamara-Gautham came together with Ajith Kumar’s film Ennai Arinthal and the film became another musical hit in Tamil Nadu. Further, there were gaps between Harris and Gautam. Harris made a grand comeback with a beautiful song titled Oru Manam in Dhruva Nakshatras from Chiyan Vikram’s ongoing release Uncertain. Harris Jayaraj was also the favorite music composer of the late famous cinematographers and directors KV Anand and Jeeva. Harris and Jeeva have collaborated in four films including 12B, Ullum Ushjume, Unnale Unnale and Dum Doom.

He worked with KV Anand in films like Ayan, Ko, Matran, Anekan and Kaapan. Harris has also composed music for the hit films Ghajini, Thuppaki and Seventh Knowledge with AR Murukadoss. When AR Rahman was busy with Hollywood films, Harris was also assigned to compose music for the film Brahmanda Shankar Anyan. He got Vikram’s career-changing film songs and an equally good background score. In 2005, he received the Tamil Nadu Government Award for Best Music Director for the music of Ananya and Ghajani. He repeated the award in 2011 with Ko.

Harris Jayaraj is also the composer who has used Bombay singer Jayashree most effectively. Harris Jayashree’s hits go on like Waseegara, Sutrum Vizhi, Ontra Rentra, Unnakul Nane. At the same time semi-classical songs, melody and tappam koothu songs will give way to Harris. Another specialty in his music production is the sound quality he maintains. Despite this, Harris Jayaraj has not had any big hits in the last few years. The love track in Dhruvanakshatra gives hope. His fans are eagerly waiting for Harris Jayaraj’s comeback in Tamil with Anirudh Ravichandar, Govind Vasantha and D. Imman.
