Despite the joint signature of about 160 outside committee chairs saying that an ‘innovation-type’ emergency committee is needed to face a crushing defeat in the general election, the opinions of senior figures such as “Innovation can be done by the formal leadership” (Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo) gathered in the direction of ‘early national convention + management-type emergency committee’. While saying An opinion was officially raised that the chairman of the emergency committee should be a senior member of the National Assembly who has been in office for at least four terms.
Yoon Jae-ok, the People Power Party’s floor leader and acting party leader, said at the in-house countermeasures meeting on the 23rd, “We have held meetings with the general meeting of elected officials, senior officials, standing advisors, first-time elected members, and external organizing committee chairs,” and added, “The entire party will establish a management-type emergency committee.” “There was an opinion that we should prepare for a convention, and on the other hand, there was an opinion that we should go to the Innovation Emergency Committee immediately to reflect the public opinion revealed in the general election as much as possible,” he said. She went on to say that “either opinion was persuasive enough.” The nature of the emergency committee is not defined in one word.
At the same time, he said, “I declared that I would not serve as emergency committee chairman. The public sentiment revealed in the general election was for change, and even if we form a management-type emergency committee, I think that appointing a new person as emergency committee chair can more clearly demonstrate our will to change.” “Because I did it,” he said.
Immediately after the in-house countermeasures meeting, Floor Leader Yoon held a meeting with senior lawmakers who had served four or more terms in the party and collected opinions regarding the launch of a new emergency committee. Regarding the results of the meeting, People Power Party Chief Spokesperson Jeong Hee-yong said, “It was agreed upon yesterday that the national convention should be held as soon as possible, as was the case at yesterday’s general meeting.” To the question, ‘Can we say that we have reached a conclusion as a management-type emergency committee?’, he simply answered, “Opinions were gathered as a committee of emergency committees holding a national convention.”
Regarding the issue of appointing the chairman of the emergency committee, he said, “Floor Leader Yoon and Acting Party Leader said that he would look for and decide in various ways, and (senior lawmakers) expressed various personal thoughts,” and “There were people who said that it should be done by more than 5 terms, and there were people who said that it should be 5 or more terms. “Some people said it was okay to do it above,” he said. However, he said, “The real name was not mentioned.”
Regarding the timing of the appointment of the emergency committee chairperson, floor leader Yoon met with reporters after the in-house countermeasures meeting and said, “I will recommend the emergency committee chairperson before the election of the floor leader on May 3.”
Regarding the nature of the emergency committee, senior members of the party have also publicly expressed their opinion that the party should focus on an early national convention. Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo, who is mentioned as a candidate for the party leadership, said in an SBS radio interview that day, “Innovation is done by the official leadership elected at the proper national convention, and now the only thing left is the convention rules.” He added, “Why not elect with 100% party sentiment now? Earlier, Representative Kwon Seong-dong also met with reporters during the general meeting of the elected members the previous day and argued about the nature of the emergency committee, saying, “It is important for the emergency committee to operate for as short a time as possible and to bring about new changes and reforms to the party by establishing a new leadership system.” Representative Kim Tae-ho also said, “We need to focus on the managerial implications of creating a new leadership.”
