The Rise of Kimbap in America: A Popular Korean Food Takes NYC by Storm

A video of a girl making kimbap at an elementary school in New York received a lot of attention, reaching almost 8 million views.

In the US, K-food, ‘kimbap’, is very popular, and exports are said to have actually increased by almost 16% in a year.

This is a report from reporter Lim Kyung-ah from New York.

“Hi, my name is Avery.

A girl takes rice, foil, and seaweed from her lunch box, saying that her mother prepared it for her.

Place rice on top of a small piece of seaweed, press it firmly, flatten it, and then roll it up to make kimbap.

“Not like this, this is kimbap.”

When asked why she likes kimbap, the girl replied, ‘I like the combination of kimbap and rice.’

A video of less than a minute, posted on New York City’s official SNS last year, continues to be a hot topic, with more than 7.77 million views.

Children from different nationalities present various lunch boxes, and the kimbap video is particularly popular.

In fact, kimbap is very popular in the United States.

Last year, frozen kimbap sold in a famous supermarket attracted explosive interest through social media and sold out.

“There are gimbap popups all over the recommended videos.”

As exports of not only kimbap but also K foods such as ramen and kimchi increased, it reached a record export amount of 4.3 trillion won this year alone.

Among them, exports to the United States were the largest at $478.7 million, an increase of 15.9% over the same period last year.

In the popular kimbap video, comments were made such as, ‘In the old days, people had to eat seaweed or kimchi secretly for fear of smelling it,’ and ‘Seeing you proud makes me cry.’

The response was that the changing status of Korea could be felt because American society was accepting Korean food.
