A report released on September 8th, International Literacy Day, sheds light on the concerning state of literacy rates in ASEAN countries. Cambodia, with a literacy rate of 78.35%, holds the unfortunate title of having the lowest literacy levels in the region, ranking 160th globally.

“The importance of literacy cannot be overstated. It goes beyond acquiring knowledge; it is about dignity and human rights,” says literacy advocate Jane Doe.

Least Literate Countries in ASEAN

  1. Cambodia: With a literacy rate of 78.35%, Cambodia ranks 160th globally.
  2. Laos: Laos follows closely behind with a literacy rate of 79.87%, ranking 154th globally.
  3. Burma: Burma has made significant progress, with a literacy rate of 93.09%, placing it at 123rd globally.

However, with the pending inclusion of Timor-Leste as a full member of ASEAN, Cambodia’s status as the least literate nation in the region is set to change. Timor-Leste currently has a literacy rate of 64.27%, ranking 179th globally. This progress calls for acknowledgment and congratulations as ASEAN works towards empowering societies through literacy.
