Arandou, Brazil – In a historic auction held on Tuesday, a four-and-a-half-year-old Nelore cow named Viatina-19 Mara Imobais has claimed the title of the world’s most expensive cow. The prestigious bovine was sold for a staggering value of more than 5.6 billion won.

This remarkable animal had previously garnered attention when half of its ownership was auctioned in 2022 for an impressive sum of approximately $800,000, the highest price recorded at the time. Neror HRO, renowned for their breed of cattle distinguished by their striking bright white coat and prominent hump on their shoulders, acquired a 33% stake in this prized cow.

Hailing from India and named after Nellore in the state of Andhra Pradesh, the Nelore breed has become a significant presence in Brazil due to their ability to thrive on low-quality feed, thanks to their efficient metabolism. As a result, Neror semen commands a high price, accounting for 65% of Brazil’s total artificial insemination market for cattle semen.

Oklahoma State University describes Nelore cattle as having loose, scaly skin and being twice the size of many European breeds. Their 30% more sweat glands make them naturally resistant to hot temperatures.

In a testament to the breed’s desirability and value, sperm from the most elite bulls can fetch a staggering $5,000 for a mere 0.55 ml, as reported by The Guardian in 2018. The Nelore breed’s adaptability and robustness have made their genetic material highly sought after.

With Viatina-19 Mara Imobais setting a new record, the world witnesses the immense commercial potential that exists within the bovine industry. This auction not only highlights the prestige of the Nelore breed but also serves as a reminder of the increasing significance of quality genetics in the livestock sector.

As the global demand for premium cattle continues to rise, the high price achieved for this exceptional cow reflects the growing appreciation for superior genetic traits and the potential for greater profits in the future.
