A Chinese automaker has unveiled an electric vehicle that closely resembles the Porsche Taycan in design but is priced at approximately one-quarter of the Taycan’s cost, according to a report from feber.se translated from Swedish. The vehicle, identified as the SAIC Motor Z7, starts at 219,800 yuan, which converts to about $32,200 USD, while the base Porsche Taycan is priced at 918,000 yuan, or roughly $134,500 USD.

The SAIC Z7 is offered in multiple configurations, including a standard sedan version and a wagon variant called the Z7T, which mirrors the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. The entry-level Z7 features a rear-mounted electric motor producing 359 horsepower and an 81 kWh battery pack. A higher-spec dual-motor version, labeled the Z7 Ultra, delivers 590 horsepower from a 100 kWh battery and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.44 seconds.

For comparison, the base Porsche Taycan produces 408 PS (equivalent to 402 horsepower) and takes 4.8 seconds to reach 100 km/h from a standstill. This means the top-tier SAIC Z7 Ultra not only undercuts the Taycan significantly in price but also outperforms it in acceleration.

The SAIC Z7 was first unveiled earlier in 2026 as a direct competitor to the popular Xiaomi SU7 and made its public debut at the Beijing Auto Show, where SAIC confirmed several variants of the model. The automaker emphasized that the vehicle is not merely a facelift of an existing design but a distinct offering aimed at providing a Taycan-inspired aesthetic at a substantially lower price point.

Industry analysts note that vehicles like the SAIC Z7 underscore China’s growing influence in the global electric vehicle market, particularly in delivering competitive performance and design at accessible price points. The significant price gap between the Z7 and the Taycan highlights the increasing pressure on established automakers from Chinese EV manufacturers, a trend previously highlighted by executives such as Jim Farley of Ford Motor Company.

While the SAIC Z7 shares visual similarities with the Porsche Taycan, particularly in profile and overall silhouette, it is engineered and produced independently by SAIC Motor, one of China’s largest state-owned automotive enterprises. The vehicle leverages SAIC’s electric vehicle platform and battery technology to achieve its performance and range specifications.

As of the report’s publication, the SAIC Z7 is available for pre-order in China, with deliveries expected to begin in the mid-to-late second quarter of 2026. No official announcements have been made regarding potential export markets beyond China at this time.
