Tiger Woods Finishes 26th Masters in Last Place, Reflects on Performance

Last place in the Masters final, 16 over par 204 strokes
26th appearance in total, 24 consecutive cuts, a new record
A sudden lack of performance from the 3rd round
“It was a good game in the 1st and 2nd rounds, but things didn’t go as planned from the 3rd round.”

‘Emperor of Golf’ Tiger Woods shot a 5-over-par 77 in the fourth round on the final day of the Masters ($20 million total prize money) held at Augusta National Golf Club (par 72) in Augusta, Georgia, USA on the 15th (Korean time), with a final total of 16-over-par. He recorded 304 strokes and finished the competition in 60th place, the lowest. This is the second time Woods has hit more than 300 strokes in the Masters since he hit 301 strokes in 2022.

Woods, who set a new record 24th consecutive Masters cut by hitting 145 strokes over 1 over par through the second round and passing the cut in a tie for 22nd, fell in the third round with 10 over par 82 strokes.

Woods, who fell 30 places in the rankings and fell out of contention for the championship, expressed his determination to complete the Masters. And early this morning, I went to the practice field to warm up.

Woods arrived at the course with his son Charlie, took a seat at the fairway wearing black pants, a red T-shirt, a black vest, and a hat, and prepared for the final four rounds, starting with practice wedge shooting. Son Charlie stood in front of Woods and looked at his swing movements, showing a loving relationship between father and son. Woods, who warmed up for about an hour, got into a cart with Charlie and followed him to the first hole.

Even before Woods hit the first hole, the course was full of fans. Almost 5,000 fans gathered from the teeing ground to both sides of the fairway and the green. As Woods walked down the fairway after finishing his tee shot, people chanted ‘Let’s go, Tiger’. It’s fun for completion.

Woods, who took part in his 26th Masters this year, played his 100th round today. Woods, who made par on the first hole (par 4), seemed to make up for his poor performance from the previous day by birdieing the second hole (par 5). However, after that, he was caught at the 5th hole (par 4). The ball I hit from the tee fell into the woods on the right side of the fairway and I couldn’t find it. Afterwards, Woods recorded a bogey at the 6th hole (par 3) and was pushed to the bottom. In the second half, he managed one bogey and no birdies, but could not improve his position.

Although he finished in last place, fans rewarded Woods with cheers and applause after overcoming all adversity and completing ’72 holes.’ That’s really the emotion of the last position. Because of this, performance varies depending on the weather. On this day, I was worried about whether I would be able to finish the race because I looked uncomfortable walking down the hill after my tee on the first hole.

Woods performed well until the second round, tied for 22nd, but showed a sharp drop in performance from the third round, held after passing the cut, and was pushed down to a tie for 52nd site. There were concerns that he could withdraw like last year as he was far from the championship race and looked tired. However, Woods came back to the stadium and interacted with tens of thousands of fans.

It has been 14 months since Woods completed 4 rounds and 72 holes in an official tournament since the Genesis Invitational in February last year. Last December, I played all four rounds of the unofficial Hero World Hero.

“It was a good week, everything was fine,” Woods said. “I played well in the first and second round of a full-time tournament for the first time in a long time,” he said, adding, “Unfortunately, yesterday (round 3) didn’t go the way I wanted.”

Woods’ schedule for the next tournament, after finishing the Masters, has not yet been determined. After the match, Woods said, “This course is familiar, but courses like Pinehurst (US Open), Valhalla (PGA Championship), and Troon (Open) are homework.” He added, “I know the course well and know how to play. Coming to is always good. However, (to take part in the next big tournament), I think I need to check my physical condition a bit more and hopefully get healthier,” he said, noting that he has not confirmed his plans to take part in the next tournament is official.
