Tinubu Recounts UK Support During Nigeria’s Pro-Democracy Struggle

President Bola Tinubu revealed that he received refuge and protection in the United Kingdom during Nigeria’s struggle against military dictatorship, disclosing that his residence was placed under surveillance by the Metropolitan Police following threats from agents of the then-ruling junta. The President made the remarks on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, during a state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, marking the first official visit by a Nigerian leader to the UK in 37 years.

Tinubu’s comments underscore the enduring ties between Nigeria and the UK, and highlight a period when the UK provided crucial support to Nigerian activists and pro-democracy advocates facing repression at home. He expressed Nigeria’s “deep gratitude” to the UK for extending refuge during what he described as the “dark years of military dictatorship.” The President specifically recalled the security measures taken to protect him, stating, “Like many Nigerians involved in the pro-democracy struggle, I found safety here, and I recall that my residence was placed under Metropolitan Police protection following threats from agents of the junta.”

The pro-democracy movement in Nigeria gained momentum throughout the 1990s, reaching a critical point after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely considered to have been won by Moshood Abiola. This decision, made by the military regime of Ibrahim Babangida, sparked widespread protests and resistance across the country, leading to a crackdown on dissent and a surge in the number of Nigerians seeking political asylum abroad.

Tinubu’s personal experience reflects the broader pattern of support offered by the UK to those opposing military rule in Nigeria. The UK’s willingness to provide sanctuary to activists and political figures played a significant role in sustaining the pro-democracy movement and ultimately contributing to the country’s transition to civilian rule. The President described his return to the UK as president of a democratic Nigeria as “deeply humbling,” acknowledging the historical significance of the support he and others received.

Beyond reflecting on the past, President Tinubu also addressed contemporary challenges facing Nigeria, particularly the growing threat of terrorism stemming from instability in the Sahel region. He emphasized Nigeria’s “enormous responsibility” to help safeguard regional stability and underscored the importance of continued cooperation with the United Kingdom in confronting these threats. “Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel,” he stated, adding that “partnership with the United Kingdom remains essential.” He also expressed his anticipation for a meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss these issues further.

The President also expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations between Nigeria and the UK, emphasizing their shared commitment to progress, mutual respect, and common values. This visit signals a renewed focus on strengthening ties between the two nations, potentially leading to increased collaboration in areas such as trade, security, and development. The visit by President Tinubu and his wife, Oluremi, is seen as a pivotal moment in fostering a stronger and more collaborative relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
