Thomas Kokou N’soukpoe, spokesperson for the Dynamique Monseigneur Kpodzro (DMK) announced Thursday on several media, the arrest on Wednesday of nine members of the said grouping of opposition parties and civil society, while they were “raising awareness” people in the Akodessêwa market.

The public prosecutor, Talaka Mawama, released a press release, specifying that a “judicial investigation has been opened against the suspects”.

“On April 3, 2024 at around 5 p.m. at the Akodessêwa market in Lomé, when no public demonstration had been authorized, individuals were surprised, distributing leaflets and chanting slogans inciting popular revolt. These individuals claiming to belong to an organization called +Urgence Républicaine+ (UR) called for an immediate end to the current electoral process. They also called for the organization of national inclusive meetings and the opening of a political transition leading to the ethical rebuilding of Togo. Four of these individuals were initially arrested in Akodessêwa and five others subsequently in Tokoin Ramco in a house identified as a gathering point from where the first group of people apprehended left,” specifies the press release read at the national television.

“A judicial investigation was immediately opened against the accusations and entrusted to the central research and criminal investigation service of the national gendarmerie. From the first hearings of those arrested, it appeared that their actions were part of a movement called +Republican Emergency+ (UR). The actions undertaken by these people are the result of aggravated disturbances to public order within the meaning of articles 495 and 496 of the new penal code,” the text continues.

“The judicial investigation is continuing with a view to shedding light on the above-mentioned facts,” underlines the press release. FIN
