This shift aims to eliminate “bricolage”—or improvised, makeshift waste handling—by implementing formalized municipal waste strategies to improve urban sanitation and public health.

Formalizing Waste Management in Five Togolese Communes

The move to move away from improvised waste disposal marks a strategic shift in how local governments in Togo handle urban refuse. According to the République Togolaise, these five communes are replacing uncoordinated waste dumping and makeshift collection methods with organized systems. The transition focuses on establishing reliable collection routes and professionalizing the waste management sector to prevent the proliferation of illegal dumpsites.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize municipal services. By moving away from “bricolage,” the communes intend to create a sustainable cycle of waste collection, transport, and disposal that reduces the environmental burden on local communities.

Butane Gas Use and Forest Preservation

Parallel to urban waste reforms, Togo has seen significant environmental gains through the promotion of butane gas as a cooking fuel. According to Togo First, the increased use of butane gas has helped preserve nearly 73,000 hectares of forests over a five-year period.

The reduction in forest loss is attributed to a decrease in the reliance on charcoal and firewood. Because butane gas provides a cleaner, more accessible alternative for domestic energy, the pressure on Togo’s forest cover has diminished, allowing for the preservation of thousands of hectares of woodland that would otherwise be harvested for fuel.

Environmental Impact of Energy and Waste Shifts

The combination of formalized waste management in the communes and the adoption of butane gas reflects a two-pronged approach to environmental sustainability in Togo. While the waste initiatives target urban sanitation and the prevention of land pollution, the energy shift addresses deforestation and carbon emissions from traditional biomass burning.

The scale of the forest preservation—nearly 73,000 hectares—highlights the direct correlation between energy policy and ecological health in West Africa.
