Tom Cruise Receives Navy’s Highest Civilian Honor for “Top Gun” legacy
LONDON – Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise, known globally for his iconic role as Maverick in the “Top Gun” franchise, was honored Tuesday with the U.S. Navy’s highest civilian award.
The Distinguished Public Service Award recognizes Cruise’s “outstanding contributions to the Navy and the Marine Corps” through his films, including the blockbuster “Top Gun” and its highly accomplished sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick.”
Cruise, currently filming in the U.K., received the medal and certificate from U.S. Secretary of the Navy carlos Del Toro during a ceremony at Longcross Studios near London.
“I am proud to receive this remarkable acknowledgement,” said the 62-year-old actor. ”I admire all of the servicemen and women. I know in life, something that is vrey true to me, is that to lead is to serve. And I know that to my core. And I see that in the servicemen and women.”
The Navy praised Cruise for substantially boosting public awareness and recognition for the dedication and sacrifices made by military personnel.
The original “Top Gun,” released in 1986, catapulted Cruise to superstardom and sparked a surge in military enlistment. The Navy even set up recruitment booths in theaters capitalizing on the film’s immense popularity.
interest in naval aviation was reignited with the release of “Top Gun: maverick” in 2022.The sequel, which saw Cruise’s Maverick character mentor a new generation of elite pilots, resonated with both longtime fans and a new generation of moviegoers.

In addition to the “Top Gun” films, Cruise was also recognized for his roles in “Born on the Fourth of July,” “A Few Good men,” and the “Mission: Impossible” series.
Cruise’s next cinematic adventure,”Mission: Impossible: The final Reckoning,” is scheduled for release in May 2025.
