Nintendo has released a demo for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream on the Nintendo Switch, offering players a preview of the life simulation game ahead of its full launch on April 16, 2026. The game, the first new entry in the Tomodachi Life series in over a decade, will also be playable on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console.

The demo allows players to create up to three Mii characters and unlock a hamster costume that can be transferred to the full game upon purchase. Players can carry over both their created Miis and the unlocked costume, providing a head start when the full version launches. Nintendo has confirmed that the hamster costume will also be available in the full game, so the demo isn’t required to obtain it.

Expanded Customization and Social Features

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream focuses on creating and customizing Mii characters, then observing their interactions on a vibrant island. The game features updated Mii creation tools, offering two distinct approaches: a guided “Get Help” option that generates characters based on user-defined traits, and a “From Scratch” option for granular control over individual features. A new face paint tool allows for further personalization using stamps or freehand drawing.

Expanded Customization and Social Features

Players can influence their Mii characters’ lives by responding to requests, adjusting their living spaces, and shaping their personalities with quirks and catchphrases. As the island population grows, relationships will develop, leading to friendships, romance, and even families.

Nintendo Switch 2 Enhancements

While the core gameplay remains consistent across both consoles, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will take advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2’s capabilities. Specifically, Nintendo has confirmed reduced loading times on the Switch 2. However, the game will not support the Switch 2’s newly added handheld mode boost function, instead running at a 1080p resolution when played undocked. There is currently no information regarding performance improvements while docked.

Mii Limit and Social Sharing

A frequently asked question regarding the game is the maximum number of Mii characters that can inhabit an island. Nintendo has officially confirmed a limit of 70 Miis per island. Despite previous concerns about restrictions, Nintendo encourages players to share posts about the game on social media.

The game allows for married Mii couples to have babies regardless of their gender. This feature adds to the dynamic and unpredictable nature of the island life simulation.

Long-Awaited Return

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream marks the return of a beloved Nintendo franchise after a 12-year hiatus. The original Tomodachi Life, released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, was known for its quirky humor and unpredictable gameplay, allowing players to create a virtual world populated by their own personalized Mii characters.

The new installment aims to recapture the spirit of the original while introducing updated features and taking advantage of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. The game’s emphasis on customization, social interaction, and the passage of real-world time promises a unique and engaging experience for players.

The demo is now available on the Nintendo Switch eShop, providing a taste of the island life that awaits players on April 16, 2026.
