The new League Phase Format Explained

The 2025-2026 Champions ​League will ⁣abandon the ‍traditional group stage in‍ favor⁣ of a ⁣single‌ 36-team league. Each team will play⁤ eight matches – four at home and four away‌ – against opponents chosen using a complex algorithm⁤ designed to ensure variety and balance. This system replaces the previous format of eight‌ groups of⁤ four teams.

The league phase standings will determine qualification ⁢for the knockout ⁣stages. The top⁢ eight ⁣teams will automatically advance,while the teams finishing ⁢9th through 16th will enter ⁤a playoff round to secure the​ remaining eight ⁣spots. The UEFA⁣ announced the pot assignments‍ on August 28th, based on UEFA club coefficients. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), as the reigning champions,‌ automatically ‌secured a spot ‌in Pot​ 1. ⁤tottenham Hotspur, ‌despite winning the UEFA Europa League (UEL), found themselves placed in ⁢Pot 3. This placement is a direct⁣ result of their lower‍ UEFA coefficient compared to other​ teams.
