Flash Floods and Landslides in North Sumatra, Indonesia

Rescuers in Indonesia recovered 16 bodies from mud, rocks, and rivers after flash floods struck villages on Sumatra Island. Six people remain missing.

Torrential rains caused mud, rocks, and trees to rush down mountains. Rivers overflowed, damaging four districts in North Sumatra. Homes were swept away, and farms were destroyed.

Rescue teams, including police and soldiers, searched for survivors in Semangat Gunung, a tourist area in Karo district. They found six bodies after a landslide hit two houses and a cottage. Nine people escaped but four, including two children, are still unaccounted for.

In South Tapanuli district, floods swept away at least 10 houses and impacted around 150 buildings. Rescuers retrieved two bodies from a river and worked to find two others missing due to the floods.

A landslide in Padang Lawas district affected several homes. Rescuers recovered the bodies of a family of four, including two children, and helped three injured people.

Reports showed grief as families watched rescuers recover bodies from mud-covered homes in Harang Julu village.

Seasonal rains from October to March often cause floods and landslides in Indonesia. This island nation has many people living in mountainous regions and near fertile floodplains.

In December, heavy rains caused a similar disaster, leaving 12 people missing. Only one body was found after floods and landslides struck villages in North Sumatra.

Lake Toba, formed by an ancient volcano, is a key site in the region and attracts many tourists. The government plans to develop it further for tourism.
