Former Trier Diocese Priest Sentenced for Sexual Abuse

A former priest from the Trier diocese has been handed a prison sentence of one year and eight months for sexually abusing a 14-year-old altar boy. The verdict, initially delivered by the Saarbrücken District Court, has been confirmed by the Federal Court. This distressing incident dates back to 1997.

The Diocese of Trier has simultaneously disclosed that the aforementioned assault took place a quarter of a century ago and reassured the public that the necessary procedures to strip the priest of his priesthood are underway. Troublingly, he has faced allegations of child molestation since as early as 1980. The Church took decisive action in 2016 by prohibiting him from engaging in any pastoral duties.

Berlin: A Trier diocese priest has been sentenced to one year and eight months in prison for sexually abusing a 14-year-old altar boy. Earlier, the Saarbrucken District Court sentenced the 69-year-old priest to one year and eight months in prison. This sentence was confirmed by the Federal Court. The incident involved the case in 1997.

At the same time, the Diocese of Trier informed that the incident happened 25 years ago and that the procedure to dismiss the priest from the priesthood is underway. Since 1980, he has been accused of molesting children. Since 2016, the Church has banned him from working as a priest.
