Tropical Cyclone ‘Koinu’ Approaching Taiwan and Eastern China, Rainfall Forecast for Thailand

Tropical Cyclone ‘Koinu’ heading towards Taiwan and Eastern China

Meteorological Department report on October 3, 2023

The Meteorological Department has provided an update on the current tropical cyclone situation in the Pacific Ocean. Typhoon ‘Koinu’ (KOINU) is currently moving northwest, with its trajectory somewhat to the north. It is expected to head towards the southern part of Taiwan Island on October 5, 2023. Subsequently, the typhoon is forecasted to continue its path towards the eastern side of China, specifically Guangdong Province and Hong Kong. However, it is projected to weaken further as it progresses.

This weather system, named ‘Typhoon Koinu’, will not directly affect the weather conditions in Thailand. This is due to the influence of a cold air mass that is spreading over southern China, causing the typhoon to weaken during this period. Regarding the occurrence of rain, it will be mainly attributed to the monsoon trough that currently extends across Thailand. Although a low-pressure area and storm winds may still need to be monitored periodically, there is no immediate cause for concern.

Looking ahead to the accumulated rain forecast for a period of 10 days from October 3 to October 12, 2023, the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has provided the following information:

  • During the period of October 3 to October 5, 2023, the wind direction will remain variable. The Gulf of Thailand and the southern region will be covered by a low-pressure area. Additionally, the monsoon trough will move down to span across the lower northeastern, middle, eastern, and upper southern regions. Rainfall may occur along the monsoon trough and low-pressure areas. Extra caution is advised for heavy rain in the lower northeast, lower central region (including Bangkok and surrounding areas), and the eastern and southern regions. Wind waves during this period will be weak to moderate, especially in the Andaman Sea, with waves reaching heights of 1-2 meters.
  • From October 6 to October 12, 2023, the monsoon trough will shift upwards, covering the northern, northeastern, and upper central regions of Thailand. This will result in increased rainfall in these areas, with the possibility of heavy rain in certain locations. As this period marks the end of the rainy season and the beginning of winter, the weather will become highly variable. Furthermore, the northern and upper northeastern regions will experience the influence of a cold air mass spreading over them.

Please note that this information is subject to change based on new data imports. It should be considered in light of the El Niño phenomenon, which can cause fluctuations in rainfall patterns and storm activity. We urge readers to utilize this information for informed decision making.
