Trump Seeks Senate Support for Spending Bill Amid Musk Criticism
Updated June 4,2025
President Donald Trump is actively working to secure Senate backing for his “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” This effort comes as elon Musk has publicly attacked the bill, creating a complex dynamic for Republican senators.
Following a White House meeting with trump, Senate Finance committee Republicans conveyed a unified front in their commitment to passing the legislation. Senate Majority Leader John Thune emphasized the collaborative nature of the effort, stating that everyone is “rowing in the same direction.”
While the legislative process unfolds within the capitol, Musk has voiced strong opposition to the bill on X, labeling it a “disgusting abomination.” His criticism has provided political cover for some Senate Republicans while frustrating others.
Sen. Thom Tillis responded to musk’s remarks, requesting “productive feedback” that senators can act upon. Sen. Tommy Tuberville suggested Musk’s stance wouldn’t significantly sway senators but echoed concerns about federal spending. Sen. John Kennedy,a “big Musk fan,” acknowledged the billionaire’s frustration with the nation’s growing debt.
Thune admitted that challenges remain in passing the bill but stressed the importance of its success. “The wheels are in motion on this,” he said. “As I said before, failure is not an option. We will get this done one way or the other, and it’s not going to be easy.”
“The president is the closer and ultimately it will be up to him to help bring some of these votes home,” Thune said.
“Give us some productive feedback that we can operate on,” said Tillis, who will attend the meeting at the White House.
“I wish he’d just say what he, what he thinks… I think he believes, in my judgment, correctly, that we’re quickly becoming debt slaves,” Kennedy said.
What’s next
Senators will continue to refine the bill, addressing specific concerns and working towards a final version before President Trump’s July 4th deadline.
