Former U.S. President Donald Trump, the leading Republican presidential candidate, claimed on the 14th (local time) that his close relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was helpful to U.S. security while he was in office.

Former President Trump made this statement at a campaign rally at Simpson University in Indianola, Iowa, a day before the Iowa Caucus, the first Republican presidential candidate primary.

He mentioned the Russia-Ukraine issue in the context of pointing out the Biden administration’s diplomatic mismanagement, and then mentioned the North Korea issue. “Kim Jong-un is very smart and very tough,” he said. “He liked me and I got along well with him. We were safe.”

Former President Trump also added, “They have a large number of nuclear weapons,” and “We did a great job.”

Meanwhile, former President Trump, who met with Chairman Kim three times while in office from 2017 to 2021, has maintained that he prevented a ‘nuclear war’ with North Korea through summit diplomacy with Chairman Kim even after leaving office.
