Trump-Musk Feud Exposes Republican Panic Over healthcare Bill
Updated June 09, 2025
Rep. John garamendi, D-Calif., says the escalating feud between Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump is creating significant internal strife for Republicans, perhaps jeopardizing their “Big Beautiful Bill.” While Republicans publicly dismiss the spat as mere social media theatrics, Garamendi contends they are privately worried about the fallout from Musk’s criticism of the proposed legislation.
Garamendi observed that Republicans were eager to leave the Capitol after a recent floor session, avoiding discussion of the bill. He suspects they will face tough questions from constituents regarding the bill’s provisions, which include cuts to healthcare access for an estimated 10.9 million people and the elimination of key tax credits for renewable energy projects. The democrat believes the Trump-Musk divorce is having a profound effect on the legislation.
Garamendi, a vocal supporter of progressive policies, including Medicare for all and the green New Deal, suggests conservatives are unsure how to proceed considering Musk’s opposition. He believes the consequences of this very public falling out will become apparent when congress reconvenes.
“Why are we giving a tax break to the super wealthy? You think they need it? They’ve got more money they can possibly spend,” Garamendi said.
He added that the reconciliation bill is in trouble and expressed hope that the discord would ultimately lead to its defeat. Garamendi has previously predicted republican disarray, suggesting in April that the musk-Trump relationship would fracture.
The ‘big Beautiful Bill’ is currently awaiting Senate consideration, where it faces opposition from fiscal conservatives. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the legislation would add $2.4 trillion to the national debt.
Garamendi argues the bill disproportionately benefits wealthy Americans at the expense of the working class. He said the bill would cut Medicaid spending by roughly $880 billion through burdensome requirements and end Obamacare-related subsidies, impacting 24 million Americans.
Republican members of congress have yet to acknowledge the impact this would have on their state budgets—let alone their constituents dependent upon both healthcare programs.
In response to the Republican legislative agenda, Garamendi said he and his Democratic colleagues are developing a “Project 2026” to promote progressive priorities, emphasizing the Democratic Party’s commitment to working families.
What’s next
The coming week will be crucial as the Senate debates the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ amid the ongoing fallout from the Trump-Musk feud. Garamendi anticipates the division will significantly impact the reconciliation legislation’s prospects.
