Trump Threatens 100% Tariff on Canadian Goods Over Potential China Trade Deal
President Donald Trump warned Canada on Saturday, January 13, 2026, that the U.S. would impose a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods entering the United States if Canada finalizes a trade agreement with China. The threat was made via a post on Trump’s Truth Social account.
“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will promptly be hit with a 100% tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.,” Trump wrote.Source: Truth Social
Trump also alleged that China would attempt to utilize Canada as a conduit to circumvent U.S. tariffs. He specifically referenced Governor Carney, stating, “If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken.”
The warning follows an announcement earlier in January 2026 by Prime Minister Mark Carney that Canada and China had reached a preliminary agreement to reduce trade barriers.
