Trump’s Threats Against Education

President-elect Donald Trump has discussed shutting down the U.S. Department of Education. His vice president, JD Vance, has labeled universities as the “enemy.” Trump has chosen Linda McMahon, a former wrestling executive, as his education secretary, despite her lack of education experience. Many believe the new administration will wage war against universities.

While Congress would need to approve shutting down the Department of Education, Trump can still influence the education sector. He has threatened to cut funding from schools that promote critical race theory or other content he finds inappropriate. He aims to keep schools free from political influence.

Conservative groups plan to capitalize on Trump’s presidency. They want to overhaul higher education, restricting university autonomy on admissions, faculty hiring, and curriculum. Trump plans to target diversity and inclusion (DEI) programs, viewing them as part of a liberal agenda to divide American society.

Plans for Higher Education

Trump’s supporters have proposed various changes. These include eliminating diversity offices, restricting access to federal funding, and removing language related to privilege and oppression from educational materials. Critics like Lynn Pasquerella, president of the American Association of Colleges and Universities, warn that these changes will dismantle liberal education.

Experts see conflicting strategies among Trump’s advisors. While some advocate for minimal federal involvement in education, others want to penalize institutions not following their policies. University leaders are uncertain of the incoming administration’s moves and are adopting a wait-and-see approach.

States like California are preparing to protect institutional autonomy. In contrast, Republican-led states like Florida and Texas are already implementing policies targeting higher education, which may serve as a model for Trump’s administration.

An Anti-Woke Agenda

Trump’s anticipated actions against universities are part of a broader conservative effort. Political science professor Isaac Kamola notes that these movements aim to reshape higher education to fit conservative views. Trump previously signed an executive order to combat race and sex stereotyping, which many states have since enacted into law, tightening restrictions on topics like racism and sexism.

These restrictions have spread widely, with 46 states introducing similar measures. States like Texas and Florida are at the forefront, enforcing laws that limit discussions about DEI. Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, has equated DEI with discrimination and exclusion.

Pasquerella highlights the trend: Many state legislatures have continued Trump’s approach to interfere with academic decisions, undermining academic freedom.

Protecting Academic Freedom

Trump’s anti-DEI agenda threatens to impact various university programs. Many services aimed at supporting students fall under DEI, which could be targeted. Advocates urge universities not to capitulate but to maintain academic independence.

Organizations like the ACLU emphasize the importance of preserving academic freedom. They argue that students have a right to receive a full educational experience, even if government opinions differ.

Some advocates hope that education reform won’t be a priority for the new administration and that it will struggle to carry out its plans effectively amidst potential chaos.
