Africa Seeks New Financial Frontiers to Unlock Economic Potential Amidst Funding Challenges
Kampala, Uganda – As traditional funding sources like aid and concessional financing dwindle, African nations are increasingly turning to global debt markets to fuel their growth aspirations. However, this shift presents a new set of hurdles, including limited access and higher interest rates, exacerbating a meaningful financing gap that constrains both public and private sector growth across the continent.
in response to these pressing challenges, a pivotal Development Finance summit is set to convene, aiming to explore innovative financing options and approaches to unlock AfricaS vast economic potential. Through inclusive dialog and strategic collaboration, the event seeks to accelerate lasting growth, address urgent development priorities, and chart a pragmatic, forward-looking path for African economies.
Dr. Patricia Ojangole, managing Director of the Uganda Development Bank (UDB), emphasized the significance of hosting the summit. ”Hosting the Development Finance summit underscores UDB’s commitment to catalysing the development finance agenda on the African continent,” she stated.”The Summit will serve as a platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and partnership building, focusing on fostering inclusive growth, financing sustainable projects, and addressing the challenges faced by national development banks in Africa.”
Participants at the summit are poised to gain invaluable insights, discover innovative solutions, and forge new partnerships. The agenda will delve into critical themes such as the Role of National Development Banks in Catalysing Sustainable Socio-Economic Development, Financing Industrial Policy in Africa, Creating Agri-Value Chains, and ensuring Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) drive African progress. Moreover, the summit will critically examine the Constraints and Opportunities facing Green financing and explore strategies to Catalyse investment with Blended Financing.
The Uganda Development Bank (UDB), as the country’s national Development Finance Institution (DFI), plays a crucial role in this endeavor. With a mandate to accelerate socio-economic development through sustainable financial and non-financial interventions, UDB offers both debt and equity financing, alongside non-financial services designed to enhance enterprise investment readiness.The bank’s strategic focus aligns with Uganda’s National Development Plan IV (NDP IV), prioritizing Primary Agriculture, Industry (encompassing agro-industrialization, manufacturing, knowledge-based industries, and extractives), and Services (including health, tourism, hospitality, education, science, technology, and innovation), as well as Infrastructure. Notably, agriculture, agro-industry, and manufacturing represent approximately 75% of UDB’s portfolio, reflecting a strong commitment to national development priorities and Vision 2040.
