Pentagon Pauses Ukraine Weapon Shipments Amid Capability Review

The Pentagon announced a temporary pause in some weapon shipments to⁢ Ukraine on Wednesday, following more than three years of continuous deliveries as Kyiv defends against the Russian invasion. The U.S. military aid plays a critical role in Ukraine’s defense.

chief Pentagon spokesman​ Sean Parnell stated during a press briefing that the​ Department⁣ of Defense⁤ is conducting a “capability review” to ensure U.S.military aid aligns with national defense priorities. The review⁤ aims to establish a framework for ​evaluating⁣ weapon shipments.

“we will not be providing any updates to specific quantities or types⁢ of munitions being provided to Ukraine or the timelines associated with these transfers but Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will continue to make‌ recommendations to the president for his decision on military assistance to Ukraine,” ‌Parnell said.

Parnell emphasized that the U.S. military maintains sufficient resources for any mission worldwide. He added that the Trump governance prioritizes national interests, and the review will provide a framework​ for evaluating munitions and their⁢ destinations, shifting ‌the national defense strategy to ‍the Indo-Pacific.

Deputy White House press secretary Anna Kelly stated via email that the decision ⁤prioritizes the country’s interests, following a Defense Department ⁤review of military support ⁢to other nations. She⁣ added, “The strength of‍ the United States Armed Forces remains unquestioned-just ask Iran.”

Ukraine responded that the pause could impede its ability to defend against increased Russian airstrikes and ground attacks.The ​nation is calling ​the acting U.S. envoy to Kyiv‌ to stress the importance of continued U.S. military aid, warning that any halt in weapon shipments could embolden Russia.

“The Ukrainian side emphasised that any delay or procrastination in supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities will only encourage the aggressor to continue the war and terror,rather ‍than seek peace,” Ukraine’s foreign ministry said.

Washington previously paused⁢ weapon shipments to Ukraine ‌briefly in February, with a longer​ delay in ​March. The united States has begun sending the last​ of the military aid approved by the Biden administration,⁢ but no new aid to Kyiv has been announced. The U.S. role in providing military assistance remains crucial.
