The Ukrainian army, suffering from depleted weapons, suddenly withdrew from the eastern battlefield of Audijivka. For Russia, this is the biggest result since it occupied the eastern strategic point of Bakhmut in May last year.

According to Reuters and AFP, Brigadier General Oleksandr Tarnausky, head of the Tauria Operational and Strategic Police in southeastern Ukraine, said in a Telegram early on the morning of the 17th (local time), “Depending on the operational situation around Audiivka , we will avoid an encirclement (by the Russian army) “To protect the lives and health of our soldiers, we decided to leave our soldiers from this city and defend it on a more advantageous front,” he said.

“This was the only correct decision when the Russians, who had a 10-to-1 artillery advantage, advanced on the bodies of our troops and continued to fire,” said Brigadier General Tarnowski. “The siege was stopped, the troops were withdrawn, and our troops began to defend on their designated front lines,” he added.

Audiyuka, located in the center of Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine, is a strategic point close to the Russian-controlled Donetsk region and has been the subject of constant fighting since the start of the war. The Russian army has concentrated its forces in Audijuka over the past few months. The Ukrainian army did its best to defend the battlefield for about four months, but a few days ago there was news that the war situation was very difficult due to the siege of the Russian army.

Previously, John Kirby, the national security communications adviser of the US White House, said in a briefing on the 15th that the biggest cause was the shortage of ammunition for the Ukrainian military, saying, “The Audi Iuka is in danger of falling into the hands of Russian.” Ukraine appeals to the United States for ammunition aid, but the war situation worsens due to delays in passing the budget bill for military aid to Ukraine in the United States Congress.

The capture of Audi Iuka is expected to be a symbolic victory at a time when Russia aims to boost military morale ahead of two years since the start of the war on the 24th and the presidential election next month. Audijvka was briefly occupied by pro-Russian separatists in July 2014 before Ukraine regained control, and Russia has claimed the area as part of Russia.

The US think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) also analyzed that the capture of Audi Iuka would be a symbolic victory that Russian President Vladimir Putin could use for propaganda purposes in next month’s presidential election. However, ISW predicted that this would not be a military victory that would cause significant changes to the 1,500 km long front.
