■ Introduction to the book

Understanding the behavior of dementia patients facilitates treatment!
Expert guide to happiness for dementia patients and their families

Many people think of dementia as a “horrible disease”. Losing your memory, daily life becomes difficult, and gradually forgetting who you are is a scary thing for anyone. Now that we have entered a very aging society, various methods are being introduced to prevent dementia.
However, when a family member has a patient with dementia, they have no time to overcome their fears and must immediately face the reality of caregiving. During this process, the family tries various treatments in the hope that the dementia patient’s memory will be maintained at least a little, but as the symptoms worsen, it becomes difficult for the family member to care for the patient and fatigue accumulates . If this happens, the patient will eventually be controlled and both the patient and the family will suffer.
In this book, two authors with experience in caring for family members with dementia present their experiences and expertise in explaining them. In particular, we help patients understand the difficulties they experience from the “patient’s perspective” and, ultimately, understand the patient’s feelings. Understanding behavior can make care easier by allowing you to provide appropriate care.
The most important thing in caring for a person with dementia is not to slow down or relieve the symptoms. It is very important to understand that the patient is still the person we love and that there are reasons for her actions. This book is a friendly guide that teaches how to live with a dementia patient, how to protect the patient’s dignity and the family’s heart, and how to make everyone happy.

■ Publisher’s book review

What if dementia came into our family? Even imagining it is difficult, and indeed imagining it itself is difficult. We are afraid of dementia, although this does not mean that from the moment you are diagnosed with dementia, your parents will not recognize you, you will not be able to walk and you will not know who you are. The fact that you never know when dementia might suddenly strike makes the fear even greater.
Both authors experienced dementia in their grandmothers. When the author, dementia expert Shinichi Sato, was young, there was no understanding of dementia patients and there was no social safety net, let alone care for dementia patients. The reason he started researching dementia was because he wanted to better understand his grandmother. Another author, the cartoonist and illustrator Nico Nicholson, returned to his hometown to help his mother care for her grandmother who had been diagnosed with dementia. This book contains a new understanding of the difficulties that Nico Nicholson actually experienced while caring for his grandmother, based on the psychological knowledge gained through Shinichi Sato’s research. The real-life experiences of the two people contribute to the authenticity of this book.
There are many different behaviors exhibited by dementia patients, and these behaviors can be broadly divided into core symptoms and peripheral symptoms. When caring for a patient with dementia at home, the entire family experiences difficulties, mainly due to peripheral symptoms. Symptoms such as behaving differently than usual, getting angry or having a rapid worsening of hygienic conditions are reasons that make home care difficult, but the family who takes care of them cannot understand this behavior. Due to this behavior, the family’s daily life becomes difficult, and in this process, the family begins to take control in the name of caring, making everyone unhappy.
However, dementia patients have their own reasons for their behavior. Dementia patients have not become different people. Everything he does contains memories and experiences from her life. Therefore, if you know the reason for the patient’s behavior, your attitude towards him can change. This is because it reminds me that the dementia patient is still my beloved family member and a person I have to live with.
Unfortunately, modern medicine cannot completely cure dementia. However, there is at least one way for the entire family to be happy while the dementia patient remains with the family. Through this book, readers will be able to understand dementia patients through the reasons for their behavior and learn to live with them while protecting their dignity. <출처: 교보문고>
