Ukraine’s Top Diplomat Issues Urgent Call to Action: Melnyk Tells Scholz to Engage with Moscow
Exploring Diplomatic Solutions to the Ukraine War
Former Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andrij Melnyk Advocates for Diplomatic Efforts
Andrij Melnyk, Ukraine’s former ambassador to Germany, has been vocal about his opinions on German politics. Now representing his country in Brazil, Melnyk continues to share his insights. In a recent interview with the Berliner Zeitung, he offered advice to Chancellor Olaf Scholz on how to approach the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Melnyk suggests that Chancellor Scholz could utilize German diplomatic channels to explore the possibility of negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He emphasizes that Germany’s embassy in Moscow and the trust that Ukrainians have in the Germans could be leveraged to facilitate these talks.
Mediation Efforts in the Global South
Melnyk notes that mediation efforts are already underway in the Global South, which he believes could be beneficial. He cites the joint paper presented by Brazil and China as an example of constructive discussions, despite some differences in opinion.
The situation is complex, but Melnyk sees a “certain movement” towards a potential resolution. He points to the recent visit of former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba to China and the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Kiev as indicators of this shift. Additionally, Melnyk mentions that Putin has shown willingness to accept mediation from China, Brazil, and India, likely due to his good relationships with the leaders of these countries.
While it is unclear whether Ukraine will be part of these negotiations, Melnyk believes that other countries, such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar, are playing a crucial role in diplomatic efforts. He cites their involvement in the return of abducted Ukrainian children as part of a “new dynamic” in the pursuit of a peaceful solution. Melnyk urges Western allies, particularly Germany, to carefully assess every opportunity for diplomatic engagement.
