Ukrainian Government Calls for Arms Support from Korea at NATO Meeting

Once again the Ukrainian government expressed its desire to provide arms support to Korea.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba attended the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Brussels, Belgium on the 4th local time. When asked by reporters, “Do you think it is time for Korea to support lethal weapons against Ukraine?” he replied, “Yes.” “It’s time,” he replied.

Minister Kuleba emphasized, “A total of 94 missiles fell on the territory of Ukraine in March alone,” adding, “This is why we need to provide more Patriot missiles to Ukraine.”

Previously, in a foreign press briefing last month, Minister Kuleba said, “We are asking the Korean government to find a way to provide (Ukraine) missiles connected to the Patriot air defense system.”

In response to this, our government drew a line by reaffirming its current policy of ‘not supporting lethal weapons’. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “The government is reviewing the situation in Ukraine comprehensively and is providing a range of support,” but also said, “There is no change in the current policy of not supporting lethal weapons to’ Ukraine.”

Foreign Affairs Minister Cho Tae-yeol, who was invited to the NATO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting as a partner country, also expressed his general position, saying, “We have provided financial and humanitarian support to Ukraine and have done our best within the scope . of our ability.”

Our government does not officially provide weapons such as artillery shells or missiles to Ukraine. However, in December of last year, the Washington Post reported, “The United States indirectly supplied Ukraine with 155mm Korean-made artillery shells, an amount estimated to be greater than the amount supplied by all European countries. “
