UN Halts Aid Deliveries to Gaza Amid Security Concerns and Humanitarian Crisis
UN Halts Aid Deliveries to Gaza Due to Security Concerns
The U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, announced on Sunday that it will stop aid deliveries into the Gaza Strip. This decision results from increasing threats from armed gangs, which have looted recent aid convoys. UNRWA attributes the decline of law and order in Gaza mainly to Israeli policies.
This aid suspension could intensify the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as winter approaches. Currently, hundreds of thousands live in poor conditions in tent camps and rely on international food assistance. Experts have warned of severe food shortages in northern Gaza, isolated by Israeli forces since early October.
Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, declared that the route to the Kerem Shalom crossing is too dangerous, highlighting that armed groups looted nearly 100 trucks earlier this month. Kerem Shalom is Gaza’s only major cargo crossing with Israel, crucial for aid since the Rafah crossing with Egypt is closed.
Lazzarini criticized Israel for the obstacles to humanitarian efforts, citing limited aid flows and the targeting of the Hamas-affiliated police, who previously offered some security.
Israel has not commented on UNRWA’s decision. It claims to facilitate adequate aid supply and blames UNRWA for mismanagement and allowing Hamas infiltration, a charge UNRWA denies. Israel’s government has moved to sever ties with the agency in recent weeks.
Israeli Airstrikes Cause Civilian Casualties in Gaza
Israeli airstrikes in Gaza overnight resulted in at least six deaths, including two young children, aged 6 and 8. The strikes targeted the Muwasi area, where many displaced families seek shelter. Medical officials reported the children’s mother and their 8-month-old sister were also wounded.
In a separate incident in Rafah, four men were killed in another strike. The Israeli military contends it aims at militants while trying to minimize civilian harm. Nonetheless, reports indicate frequent civilian casualties in their operations.
Allegations of War Crimes in Gaza
A former Israeli defense minister has accused the government of committing ethnic cleansing in northern Gaza. This region has seen heavy military engagement, with Israeli forces largely cutting off humanitarian aid. Thousands have fled the area, while tens of thousands remain trapped.
Netanyahu’s government has disputed these claims, branding them as inflammatory. Meanwhile, international courts are investigating potential war crimes and genocide allegations against Israeli officials.
Ceasefire Talks Resume Amid Ongoing Conflict
The conflict erupted on October 7, 2023. Hamas’s attack led to the deaths of around 1,200 people in Israel and the capture of about 250 hostages. Israel’s retaliatory actions have reportedly killed over 44,429 Palestinians, including many women and children.
Efforts for a ceasefire continue, although stalled due to disagreements over territory withdrawal. Behind-the-scenes negotiations are touted by Israeli officials as ongoing, with hopes for an agreement.
The situation remains dire, with widespread destruction in Gaza and high displacement levels among the population.
