Uncovering Herpes Virus in Cats: Symptoms and Risks

Offline – SBS News

Feline parvovirus, which we talked about in the previous article, is the deadliest virus that causes digestive symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting and is even life-threatening. This time we take into consideration the herpes virus, which is not as dangerous as the parvo virus, but has a high incidence, accounting for more than 80% of respiratory diseases in cats.

What exactly are the symptoms?

1. Respiratory symptoms

The herpes virus causes feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR). When a cat breathes, he makes a wheezing sound as if he is clogged, and this is because the nasal (nose) and bronchial mucosa are swollen. It is also accompanied by a runny nose and sneezing due to exudate caused by inflammation. Smell is a very important part of a cat’s appetite, so it is normal for cats to not eat well.

2. Ocular symptoms

Serious eye diseases such as edema in the conjunctiva and persistent yellow eye mucus occur. In some cases, ulcers (wounds) form on the cornea, and if these symptoms persist, the upper and lower eyelids may dry out, making it difficult to open the eyes.

What happens if we don’t respond early?

If you confuse it with a common cold or eye disease and miss the “golden time” for treatment, it can lead to serious complications.

1. Respiratory symptoms

Inflammation limited to the upper respiratory tract can spread to the lower respiratory tract, the lungs, causing pneumonia. Pneumonia is very deadly, and even if cured, it takes a long time, thus requiring a lot of time and money from the owner, in addition to the suffering of the cat.

Furthermore, while the virus is infected, the normal structure of the nasal cavity is permanently damaged. As a result, your ability to filter waste products from the air is significantly reduced, so you could live with sinusitis for the rest of your life.

2. Ocular symptoms

While waiting for the eye disease to heal on its own, a perforation (hole) may develop in the cornea, making it impossible to restore the eye’s normal structure. In these cases, a situation may arise where the only way is to remove the eyeball.
