[디지털투데이 AI리포터] Although time passes equally for everyone, there is a tendency for people of the same age to appear different on the outside. For this reason scientists introduced the concept of “biological age”.

On the 19th (local time), the New York Times (NYT) reported that even classmates of the same age in high school could look 10 years older, and introduced what scientists call “biological age”.

“People have an intuitive understanding of aging, but they may not realize that it is what researchers call a ‘biological process,’” said Nir Barzilai, director of the Institute for Aging at the Albert Einstein College of Medicines.

“Biological age is the accumulation of measurable damage in our body,” said Andrea Britta Maier, PhD, at the Center for Longevity at the National University of Singapore. “This damage occurs not only through natural aging, but also acquired through our environment and behavior.”

Some scientists are trying to assign a number directly to biological age by measuring a person’s cellular health. This measurement method is currently available via a blood test, but some warn that “this is not a comprehensive measurement method.”

Biological age has often been discussed, including in Dr. Alex Comfort’s 1969 article, but how to measure it has long been a challenge for scientists.
